Samuel Grant History 1980s to 2004

1987       Huddersfield company, Hawskmoor Tapes Ltd purchased and becomes wholly owned subsidiary of Samuel Grant Ltd, enabling the company to meet the increasing demand for printed adhesive tapes

1988       Hawksmoor relocated to Leeds. Spark free lighting and huge extraction fans introduced to remove flammable fumes from solvents used in tape-printing. Hawksmoor holds over 5000 print designs on file.

1988       CL Plastics wins bid to create ‘Crop cover’ – revolutionary heavy guage polythene created to cover Lincolnshire fields and force carrots to reach maturity earlier.

1988       Computers are introduced

1989       Fourth printer and laminating machine bought to cope with additional Hawksmoor business and supply the need for laminated printed tapes for chemical labels. Samuel Grant’s first ever company brochure produced!

1991       Grant’s celebrates 100 years – dispenses Centenary gifts and a tax-free bonus to all employees as well as hosting a grand dinner dance. Ladpack Supplies is taken over, to form the new Samuel Grant (Sheffield)

1992       Grant’s buys the adjacent ‘National Federation of Fish Friers’ headquarters to increase office space.  Paper and packaging company Leete and Co (Cheshire) purchased to form Samuel Grant (North West) Ltd

1993       Andrew Grant (current Joint Managing Director, Samuel Grant’s great grandson and David’s son) takes over the running of the North West company, having shadowed his father in Leeds and worked at CL Plastics to learn about polythene.  Jay Bee Plastiks purchased and becomes Samuel Grant (North East)

1994       New brochure created, advertising the business for the first time as The Samuel Grant Group – offering ‘The Complete Industrial Packaging Service’

1998       Marmax Products Ltd purchased, producing furniture and boxes out of recycled plastics. Matthew Grant (David’s younger son) takes the helm. Get contract to produce ‘potato boxes’ for Morrisons Supermarkets to avoid issues with wood splintering. Box manufacturing moved to Leeds, whilst furniture remains in Caistor

1999       Order book purchased for S Milnes Packaging Brighouse

2000       First company website made

2001      Marmax products relocated to Stanley with further room for expansion – being developed by Matthew Grant into highly successful company.  The order book of packaging company Beevers and Barrett Ltd of Huddersfield is purchased

2003       First paper brochure introduced

2004       Samuel Grant (Midlands) comes into existence. Leeds Conversion Floor closed – decision made to outsource sheeting, reeling and guillotining. North West branch closes following collapse of biggest customer Ilford’s photographic company
